The Power of Personal Branding

Right, wrong, or indifferent, branding is relevant and beneficial for a wide range of individuals, especially creatives. You can be the coolest, most talented person in your field, but without a well-designed brand that speaks to who you are both professionally and personally, it is difficult to stand out in the crowd. Going beyond a catchy logo, it is important to consider elements like a consistent color palette, custom typography, an authentic online presence, and an overall well-defined identity to help build credibility in your chosen field.

Consistent Color Palette

Color can play a major role in client and consumer decision-making. Do your brand colors speak to your intended audience? What’s more important, do your brand colors represent your product, service, and chosen industry?  Regardless of whether your field is fun and light-hearted or serious and on the conservative side, ensure your chosen color combinations reflect your intentions appropriately and capture your selected audience’s attention.

Custom Typography

Similar to the color palette typography and font selection can reflect on your brand’s intention. Choose fonts according to your product or service, and ensure that combinations for headlines, body copy, and even accent copy complement each other and are legible across all your content.

Authentic Online Presence

In today’s digital age, having a strong online presence is crucial for building a personal brand as a creative. What’s even more critical is ensuring that your online presence is authentic. Share appropriately across platforms such as social media, your website, blog posts, and email newsletters, and create content that is a selective mix between professional and personal information. Note the emphasis on the words used here, including “appropriately” and “selectively,” but when done in an authentic way will help connect with your audiences and, in turn, potential clients.

Well-defined Identity

You may have heard large corporate brands sharing a mission, vision, or value statement to drive company decisions and position these brands in the marketplace. Although this might be a bit formal for a personal brand, the underlying concept is similarly important. To round out your custom visual identity including your logo, color palette, and typography, it is important to identify character traits, personal values, skills and experiences, and unique selling points that make you who you are professionally and personally.

In essence, personal branding is a valuable tool for creatives who want to establish a unique identity, present their work consistently, and build an authentic online reputation. It is a dynamic process that involves consistently communicating one’s values, skills, and experiences to create a positive and memorable connection with your audiences and clients alike.
